We’re extremely delighted that a project we devised a year ago launched at The Rap Factor battle at Shrewsbury’s Loopfest in May 2025.

There’s so many reason why we wish to help the county’s children and communities and the best way of doing that is to collaborate with our school’s and educational establishments.

Radio participation, especially in school or community radio, offers numerous benefits for young people, including increased confidence, enhanced communication skills, and a platform for expressing themselves. It also fosters teamwork, encourages literacy, and can even contribute to the development of a sense of community.

We wish to connect across Shropshire and we’re delighted that we’re in contact with many school’s about our School Radio Club.

We wish to thank Wilfred Owen Primary School for being the first to work with us and pilot the School Radio Club project that is broadcast on our ‘Your Voice Matters’ Saturday morning show – we LOVE to see and hear what your students are doing with this opportunity.

With a School Radio Club we’ll be able to hear on the ‘Your Voice Matters’ show what young people think of their local communities, what’s important to them, what is of concern and how they think these issues should be addressed. All school’s can also feature their hero stories, events, milestones, sports results – whatever they think. They’ll create their own audio identities and have a team made up of pupils in proferssional radio roles capturing the audio and prducing theior monthly radio show.

We believe our School Radio Club is completely unique in the UK, for a radio station to offer training, support and air time, and to connect county schools through a designated radio show that we can all listen to. Radio can be a source of fun and entertainment for young people. It can provide them with a way to express themselves creatively and connect with others.

Here’s some well known issues :

  1. Young people are bombarded by counter intuitive messages
  2. Being on the SEN spectrum is normal and to be embraced
  3. Few opportunities to talk and develop a skill to communicate
  4. Opportunity to learn and be creative
  5. Many young people can feel isolated or lost especially in our rural county
  6. Digital transformation a real issue like AI

This is what we do :

  1. We implement radio audio kit into your school
  2. We teach your chosen tutors how to capture and edit your pupils audio
  3. They teach their radio club pupils
  4. Your radio club pupils interview & chat about your school and social issues
  5. We receive your audio each month from your school
  6. We master and air it on radio on a designated date
  7. The Saturday show reflects local area opinions from schools countywide

Collaborating we can achieve a wide variety of results :

  1. Your school has an audio representation on local radio that is also shared on social streams which we believe is completely unique
  2. We will all learn what is happening  in your school, your events, milestones, interviews, whatever you decide forms your show
  3. Your opinions and perspectives on subjects that we ask you to comment upon to understand what your pupils think
  4. We’ll learn what social / community issues affect your school in your local community and what your pupils think can be done
  5. Your pupils will gain oodles of confidence and resilience by forming and presenting information and opinions
  6. Your pupils will gain many new skills and attributes and your School Radio Club processes will relate to the school curriculum

Here’s a more detailed look at the benefits :

  1. Confidence Building:
Many young people find speaking into a microphone less intimidating than public speaking in a classroom setting.
Radio participation provides a safe space for young people to build confidence and overcome anxieties about communication.
  2. Communication and Literacy Skills:
Radio relies on both speaking and listening, honing those crucial communication skills.
Preparing scripts and presenting information on air can improve literacy skills.
The need to write scripts and prepare between links can help improve literacy skills.
  3. Empowerment and Voice:
Radio offers a platform for young people to share their voices and perspectives on issues that matter to them.
It can empower young people to take agency in their own production of audio content.
Youth radio can create opportunities for young people to share their own cultural perspectives.
  4. Teamwork and Collaboration:
Planning and producing radio shows requires a great deal of teamwork and collaboration.
Working with others on a radio project can help young people develop valuable teamwork skills.
  5. Skill Development and Personal Growth:
Radio can help young people develop skills in areas such as public speaking, broadcasting, and creative writing.
These skills can be valuable for future career paths and personal growth.
Youth radio can also provide opportunities for young people to meet new people and experience new environments.
  6. Community Engagement:
Community radio stations can provide a platform for young people to connect with their local communities.
This can help them feel more connected to their surroundings and develop a sense of belonging.
  7. Exposure to Different Cultures and Perspectives:
Radio can expose young people to a wide range of different cultures, perspectives, and ideas.
This can broaden their horizons and help them develop a more global perspective.
  8. Informal Learning and Education:
Youth radio can provide informal learning opportunities for young people, allowing them to learn about various topics through their involvement.
This can supplement their formal education and provide them with new knowledge and skills.

We’re super proud to have so much support for our School rsdio Club project.
